Institute for the Study of Adult Literacy
By The Numbers works with the Institute for the Study of Adult Literacy
at Penn State University on the annual statewide evaluation of Pennsylvania's family literacy programs as well
as the evaluation of a number of individual programs within the state. The annual evaluation reports for
2001-2002,
2000-2001,
1999-2000, and
1998-1999
are available online.
We are also now working with the Institute on the annual statewide evaluation of all adult basic and literacy education (ABLE) programs in Pennsylvania.
We have worked with the Institute on a project to identify work-based foundation skills for employees, basic skills certificate development, an evaluation of family learning centers operated by the Literacy Volunteers of America with funding from Verizon, an evaluation of the Queens Borough (New York) Public Library's video teleconferencing program, and an evaluation of Pennsylvania's statewide Educational Quality for Family Literacy Initiative. - Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13
By The Numbers is currently working with Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 to
evaluate their Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (REMS) project, which is designed to
create, strengthen, and improve emergency management plans in local school facilities. We are also currently working with IU 13
on the Achieving Rigor and Relevance in Math and Science (ARRMS) project, which is designed to increase academic achievement of
secondary students in mathematics and science by enhancing the content knowledge and teaching skills of classroom teachers.
By The Numbers recently worked with IU 13 to evaluate their Early Reading First project, which is designed to improve the literacy skills of young children. We also recently worked with them to evaluate a three-year educational plan to provide Pennsylvania secondary school students with the knowledge and skills to make an informed decision about organ and tissue donation.
By The Numbers has also worked with IU 13 and Millersville University on an evaluation of a project aimed at increasing and enhancing the skills of teachers, administrators, and support staff in IU 13 school districts when working with English language learners, on a survey of Pennsylvania ESL programs, on developing indicators of program quality for adult basic and literacy education in Pennsylvania, on program improvement practices in adult basic and literacy education programs in Pennsylvania, and on designing an organ and tissue donation awareness curriculum for Pennsylvania high-school students. - World Relief
By The Numbers is currently working with World Relief on evaluation of a
project in the Tampa Bay/Clearwater area that provides funds to local police to investigate human trafficking cases as well as
funds to provide services to trafficking victims. By The Numbers earlier completed a needs assessment and an evaluation for World Relief of a
program designed to provide comprehensive services to victims of human trafficking in five cities in the
southeastern United States.
- Morgan State University
By The Numbers is working with Morgan State University on the
evaluation of their MARC U*STAR (Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research) program.
The MARC U*STAR program
provides support for undergraduate students who are members of minority groups who are underrepresented
in the biomedical sciences so that these students can improve their preparation for graduate training
in biomedical research.
We have also worked with Morgan State University of evaluations of their RCMI (Research Centers Minority in Institutions) program and MBRS SCORE (Minority
Biomedical Research Support - Support of Continued Research Excellence) program. The RCMI program provides funds to enhance the
research infrastructure and capabilities at Morgan State in the areas of biomedical, behavioral, and
environmental health. The MBRS SCORE program is designed to increase the number of underrepresented
minorities participating in the biomedical sciences or in health professions.
- Grambling State University
By The Numbers is working with Grambling State University on the
evaluation of their MARC (Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research) and RISE (Research
Initiative for Scientific Enhancement) programs.
The RISE program is designed to enhance the competitiveness of program participants in gaining admission into graduate schools
and upon completion of the graduate programs, pursue careers in biomedical research.
The MARC program provides support for undergraduate students who are members of minority groups who are underrepresented
in the biomedical sciences so that these students can improve their preparation for graduate training
in biomedical research.
- Clemson University
By The Numbers worked with the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at
Clemson University
on the development of five nutrition-related websites:
Nutri-Web and the
Nutrition Information & Resource Center,
both informational websites; a site on
Food Stamp Nutrition Education in South Carolina;
a site on the
Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) in
South Carolina; and a website called Lucy's
Tasty Treasures that accompanies a television show on nutrition for elementary school age children.
We have also worked with Clemson on a study of food consumption and nutrition among
Hispanic immigrants to the U.S., and an evaluation of a healthy lifestyle education program for
undergraduate students.
- Tuscarora Intermediate Unit 11
By The Numbers worked with Tuscarora Intermediate Unit 11 on an evaluation
of Pennsylvania's I Am Your Child initiative. By The Numbers also
worked with TIU on an evaluation of assessment practices in adult basic and literacy education programs in
Pennsylvania, a survey of adult basic and literacy education agencies about their participation in professional
development trainings provided through TIU, and an evaluation of TIU's family literacy programs.
- Center for Schools & Communities
By The Numbers works with the Center for Schools &
Communities on an annual evaluation of
Pennsylvania's Family Centers,
which integrate and provide community services for families. By The Numbers has also worked with the
Center for Schools & Communities on evaluating an initiative designed to improve school safety.
- Goodling Institute for Research in Family Literacy
By The Numbers is working with the Goodling Institute for
Research in Family Literacy at Penn State on several
analyses using
Pennsylvania's statewide family literacy database, including studies of family participation
and literacy gains.
- West Virginia Department of Education
By The Numbers worked with the West Virginia Department of Education
to analyze student assessment data in a statewide evaluation of West Virginia's Reading First (K-3) program.
- Institute for Caregiver Education
By The Numbers has worked with the Institute for Caregiver
Education on employee surveys at several healthcare facilities to identify training needs for
managers and staff.
- Family Health Council of Central Pennsylvania
By The Numbers is working with the
Family Health Council of Central Pennsylvania
on an evaluation of their tobacco prevention and cessation programs, which cover approximately one-third of the state of Pennsylvania.
These include prevention programs in secondary schools and in local communities, and cessation programs offered by health care providers.
- Pennsylvania Department of Health
By The Numbers works with the
Pennsylvania Department of Health
on an annual process evaluation of their Community Planning Group's (CPG) annual planning effort for
HIV/AIDS prevention programs.
- North Central District AIDS Coalition
By The Numbers has worked with the
North Central District AIDS Coalition (NCDAC)
in Pennsylvania on their 2004-2007
regional needs assessment and their 2000-2003 needs
assessment.
- Penn State School of Nursing
By The Numbers has done statistical analyses for research projects with faculty in the
Penn State School of Nursing on elders, health care
professionals, and HIV/AIDS populations.
- Penn State Cooperative Extension
By The Numbers developed and maintains the Penn State Nutrition
Links website, which features significant online data entry and data compilation capabilities for
program evaluation.
Cathy Kassab of By The Numbers has done analyses of farm safety and accident data, and she led the
evaluation of the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer and Environmental Risk
Factor Project.
- European Commission
By The Numbers is working with the European Commission and the
Agricultural Economics Research Institute to
analyze the implications of European Union trade liberalization with the member countries of ASEAN
(Association of Southeast Asian Nations), India and South Korea, focusing on the agri-food sector.
- Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development
By The Numbers has worked with the Directorate for Food, Agriculture, and Fisheries at the
Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) on an
analysis of preferential international trade arrangements.
By The Numbers has also worked with OECD on an evaluation on the effects of U.S.
farm income and price support programs on U.S. agricultural production, on an evaluation of the market
impacts of changes in agricultural programs in OECD member countries, and on an evaluation of
multifunctionality in agriculture.
- American Farm Bureau Federation
By The Numbers has worked with the
American Farm Bureau Federation on sugar policy options for the U.S.,
comparing the current U.S. sugar program to an alternative similar to price and income support
programs used for other major crops in the United States.
- USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service
By The Numbers worked with USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service
on a review of the National Resources Inventory, a
statistically based survey of land cover, land use, soil erosion, prime farmland, wetlands, habitat
diversity, conservation practices, and other natural resource conditions on U.S. nonfederal lands.
