Higher Education

Our current and recent projects and partners in higher education include:
Grambling State University

We are working with Grambling State University on the evaluation of their Center for Mathematical Achievement in Science and Technology (CMAST) project, which is providing enrichment activities designed to increase student academic success in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in a STEM major. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation. We have also evaluated the MARC U*STAR (Minority Access to Research Careers) and RISE (Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement) programs at Grambling. These programs provided support for minority undergraduate students who are underrepresented in the biomedical sciences, to improve their preparation for graduate training in biomedical research. The MARC U*STAR and RISE programs were funded by the National Institutes of
Health.
Institute for the Study of Adult Literacy

We cooperate with the Institute for the Study of Adult Literacy at Penn State University on data analysis for adult basic and literacy education programs for the Bureau of Postsecondary and Adult Education in the Division of Adult Education of the Pennsylvania Department of Education. We have also worked with the Institute on a project to identify work-based foundation skills for employees, basic skills certificate development, an evaluation of family learning centers operated by the Literacy Volunteers of America with funding from Verizon, an evaluation of the Queens Borough (New York) Public Library's video teleconferencing program, and an evaluation of Pennsylvania's statewide Educational Quality for Family Literacy Initiative.

ExCELL-E was funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

East Stroudsburg University

We are working with East Stroudsburg University (ESU) on the evaluation of their Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) Clear Path program, which is designed to ensure timely baccalaureate degree completion among students transferring to ESU from community colleges in high demand STEM disciplines. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation.

Lehigh Carbon Community College

We are working with Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) on the evaluation of their CAST (Contextualizing Algebra for STEM Technicians) project. This project is designed to increase STEM students’ success at LCCC and other colleges through a course redesign of college algebra that includes real-world, multi-disciplinary applications and collaborative learning activities that are discovery-based.

Morgan State University

We have worked with Morgan State University on evaluations of their MARC U*STAR program, as well as evaluations of their RCMI (Research Centers Minority in Institutions) program and MBRS SCORE (Minority Biomedical Research Support – Support of Continued Research Excellence) program. These programs are funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Clemson University

We have worked with Clemson University on a study of food consumption and nutrition among Hispanic immigrants to the U.S., and an evaluation of a healthy lifestyle education program for undergraduate students.

Goodling Institute for Research in Family Literacy
